Excursion Outline

Welcome to our home! We can't wait to host you here in Charleston and show you our beautiful city! For over 15 years we’ve called the Holy City home and we’re confident that Charleston is going to be a photographic high point of your artistic journey.

The area surrounding the city of Charleston is rich with photographic potential. The locals call the surrounding communities and vast marshland the Lowcountry. If you’re curious why, it’s simply because we don’t move far from the water table in terms of altitude.

It's safe to say that when the azaleas come into bloom, Charleston is bathed in color and history comes alive. Spring is easily the very best time of year to visit and photograph the Lowcountry. For this workshop, together we’ll explore all of the hidden gems we have found. We spend an extraordinary amount of time with our company Charleston Photography Tours, searching for the unknown photographic potential of the Lowcountry.

We live here, so not only do we know the area, but our expenses are minimal. Because of this, we are able to pass those savings on to you!

We will make sure you're not only in the right place for the right light, but we will also guide you to areas only locals will know about. From private plantations to lush azaleas, you'll see Charleston and the Lowcountry in all their beauty. We’l also capture the barrier island off our coast where you’ll photograph the sun rising over the Atlantic on a boneyard beach.

EXPERIENCEBEGINNER - ADVANCED

Our excursions are beneficial for both the beginner and seasoned photographer. All guests will experience one-on-one instruction, with the emphasis being on the individual's strengths and desires.

ACTIVITYEASY - MODERATE

Most of the locations we have scheduled will be within the ability of anyone who is in moderate shape. Although a short hike will be necessary to arrive at some locations, the trails are not trecherous.

TERRAINLIVE OAKS - BEACHES - PLANTATIONS

Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry are lined by the Atlantic Ocean and veined with a massive wetland system giving way for not only great landscape opportunities, but a wide variety of wildlife.

GROUP SIZE8 GUESTS

We believe group size is important for the ability to provide as much one-on-one instruction in the field as necessary.

Keith & Tiffany spent time with each one of us, one-on-one, to make sure we understood the skills and got a great shot. They’re incredibly skilled and knowledgeable. They were able to break down the techniques in a way that everyone could understand and put into practice.

Itinerary

All locations and times visited will be determined by the conditions given. All elements are watched closely for the best photographic and learning experience. Please note the itinerary can change based on weather, tides and the following should only be considered as a sample of what each day would look like and may not be the order in which the workshop is hosted.

Bonus Session

We've listened to our guests and have implemented something that has been hugely beneficial in our time together. Each workshop group will be invited to a live, recorded, online critique and post processing session, a short time after the workshop. This makes way for more shooting in the field and the option to learn from the comfort of your home and the ability to refer to the recorded session for future reference.

Day One
At 3:00 in the afternoon we’ll gather at the hotel for a brief meet and greet. We’ll give you a run down of what to expect on the workshop, daily departure times and the potential weather conditions we’ll enjoy during our time together.

Following our meet and greet we’ll meet at one of our favorite local restaurants and enjoy dinner together. It’s a great time for us all to get to know each other. Our sunset location is located closely to the restaurant and we’ll capture the sun setting over the Charleston harbor. We’ll keep it low key tonight while we begin our new friendships and cover photographic techniques that will set the foundation for all we're going to learn and cover during our time together.

Day Two
Being located on the east coast, sunrises in the Lowcountry are spectacular. Our first morning together will be an early one. Join us as we board a boat and make our way to an uninhabited island, off the Charleston coast, to photograph its boneyard beach with a Milky Way backdrop and finish off with an unforgettable sunrise! Afterwards, we’ll gather for breakfast and discuss the remainder of our day. Following a short break due to an early rise, we’ll gather together for a photo critique and discussion on composition and the use of light. Afterwards, we’ll be back on our adventure to photograph and capture the natural beauty of Charleston. Along the way, we’ll stop for a bite of southern food for dinner, then continue shooting well into sunset and the blue hour, before calling it a day.

Day Three
It’s an early start as we head out to capture sunrise over the Atlantic. This morning's focus for our photography instruction is moving water and motion in photography. We’ll discuss tips and tricks for identifying and creating movement and depth in our images. We will also spend time discussing the use of filters and properly exposing for the moment.

After our morning field session, expect the remainder of today's itinerary to be filled with photographic opportunities, as we hop from place to place to cover a variety of locations, including Oak Allees, historic ruins, black water swamps, shrimp trawlers, marshes and the Azalea filled plantations.

We’ll end our day photographing the beautiful marshlands of the Lowcountry as the sun sets and paints the area in brilliant colors.

Day Four
Today is our last day together and we'll be up well before dawn to make the most of our last day! By this time you’ll have a keen understanding of how to capture the beauty of sea foam as it moves up towards the beach and recedes out. You’ll enjoy this last morning where you’ll get to put into practice all of the skills you learned while we were together.

Following our busy morning, we’ll enjoy a bountiful breakfast where we’ll trade contact info, chat about our experiences in Charleston and then say “see you later” until our next adventure!
